Happy Sad Song

I was driving on my way back from Cyberjaya. Usually on the way back, I on the radio and listen to some music to keep me awake & also to hear all the buzz on air, including maybe some latest songs.

Then I heard this song by songstress Mariah Carey. It's not a super recent song, but well rather new and they were playing it on air.

All the while when I heard this song, I thought it had a happy feel to it. Without even listening to the lyrics, but just the tune, I thought it was rather upbeat.

But because I had a mini course over the weekend by a musician friend who taught me about 'major' & 'minor' in song composition, hence I paid attention to the lyrics.

Then, I realised that it is such a sad song, filled with emotions. I couldn't believed what I listened as it was quite a contradiction to what I thought the song was about (ie happiness).

Simply by me now listening to the lyrics, this song sure stirs the emotions... it made some flashbacks in the mind. See if it does for you...

Here are the lyrics & the video.

Bye Bye - Mariah

This is for my peoples who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby, your man, or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye (no, no, no)
Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers, friends and cousins
This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers
Lift your head to the sky 'cause we will never say bye

As a child there were them times
I didn't get it but you kept me in line
I didn't know why you didn't show up sometimes
On Sunday mornings, and I missed you
But I'm glad we talked through
All them grown folk things
Separation brings
You never let me know it
You never let it show because
You loved me and obviously
There's so much more left to say
If you were with me today face to face

[Chorus:]
I never knew I could hurt like this
And everyday life goes on like
"I wish I could talk to you for awhile"
Miss you but I try not to cry
As time goes by
And soon as you reach a better place
Still I'd give the world to see your face
And I'm right here next to you
But it's like you're gone too soon
Now the hardest thing to do is say bye bye

(Bye Bye [3x])
Bye bye

And you never got the chance to see how good I've done
And you never got to see me back at number one
I wish that you were here to celebrate together
I wish that we could spend the holidays together

I remember when you used to tuck me in at night
With the Teddy Bear you gave to me that I held so tight
I thought you were so strong
You'd make it through whatever
It's so hard to accept the fact you're gone forever

[Chorus]

(bye bye bye bye bye bye [3x])
Bye bye

This is for my peoples who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby, your man, or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye (no, no, no)
Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers, friends and cousins
This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers
Lift your head to the sky 'cause we will never say bye

[Chorus]

  2. I love this song! I even dedicated this song to my friend who's father died in May this year. It's at my blog here http://foongpc.blogspot.com/2008/05/bye-bye.html

Most of the time, when we listen to a song, we never really listen to the lyrics properly, but when we do, we'll feel differently about the song.

This song is very touching and will bring a tear or two to your eyes.

And yes, if you want to compose a sad song, make sure it's in the minor key : )

  3. Yeah, it was a great song. Get to know this song when she sang this song when she was the invited guest for the recent American Idol! I instantly loved it!

  4. I like only certain songs from Mariah... she has a high falsetto (is that how it is spelt).. one of her songs I like is "I believe" duet with witney houston, if i m not mistaken..

  5. I listen to sad song to cheer me up whenever I am feeling down and out. I realize it few years back and have asked my friends to try that, not sure whether it works for them.

  11. We interpret things differently as we go through different stages of life. It all depends on our state of mind at that moment I guess.

Thanks for dropping by my blog. I've replied your email. :)

  14. Hello quachee..
When I first reading your very first paragraph.. I can guess the song will be Mariah Carey- Bye Bye..
It was my song some months ago. I had such a great emotional feeling to her lyrics and rhythm when my granny has just passed away. A friend of mine sent the song to me and told me, "This is your song".

Well, true enough the song has touched my heart and I believe it touches everyone's heart too.. :)

Lesson I've learned: Be grateful with whatever we have now and don't regret when we loss them..

Have a nice day quachee.. :)

  17. I only play the piano so can only compose on the instrument. Also, I'm a noob on recording and loading my recordings onto my blog. Still learning how to do so, see if can learn from curryegg. Hopefully, if successful, you can hear my piano performances on my blog : )
